Our salmon are raised in pens through which flow thousands of cubic metres of water each day. They can swim freely, although their natural tendency is to shoal, similar to many other pelagic fish. Over the salmons lifetime they swim the equivalent of many thousand of miles, as they would in the wild.
Our salmon are fed a diet of high quality fish meal and fish oils derived from wild caught small fish, such as capelin, which they would eat in the wild. The feed contains carotenoid pigments, of which there are 600 naturally occurring pigments, resulting in the pink flesh colour, and also have an essential nutrient effect on the health and well-being of the salmon. Feeds are free from all genetically modified ingredients.
The welfare of our salmon is critical; happy healthy salmon will survive and grow well; growth and survival rates are now 99 % throughout the life cycle.
Wester Ross farming methods enhance the welfare of our salmon:
- Salmon are stocked at very low densities; maximum stocking density is 1.5 % fish to 98.5 % water; however throughout most of the seawater growing phase, salmon are stocked at under 1% fish to 99 % water. This approach ensures that our salmon have sufficient space for happy, healthy growth.
- Operating for 27 years has generated a wealth of hands-on experience; matched by no other farmer in Scotland. Our two farming managers have a combined experience exceeding 40 years.
- Our emphasis on a welfare first approach ensures that our salmons health dictates operational planning of the farms.
